This unique design draws inspiration from the wisdom of I-Ching, an ancient Chinese philosophy that emphasizes the balance of opposing forces. The homeowner, who embraces the teachings of I-Ching, desired a home that reflects this philosophy. Chia-Yu Chen ingeniously incorporates hexagrams, symbolic graphics representing different life situations, throughout the residence to communicate special meanings.
The strength of this design lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the ancient philosophy of I-Ching with modern aesthetics. The minimalist black-and-white color scheme represents the harmony of yin and yang, while linear transitions symbolize the natural law of constant change. Hexagrams representing Heaven, Earth, Family, and Advancement are subtly integrated into the grand bookcase and wall, adding depth and meaning to the design.
The realization of this design is achieved through careful attention to detail and the skillful use of materials. The black-and-white color scheme, the collocation of light and shadows, and contrasting contours, elevation, and linear flow all contribute to the representation of yin and yang. The hexagrams are strategically placed and symbolically aligned, creating a sense of balance and unity. The use of natural elements such as pine, white gravel, and a potted tree further enhances the interaction of opposing forces.
With an area of 112.4 m2, this design showcases the designer's meticulous attention to detail and technical expertise. Each hexagram is thoughtfully crafted, and the overall design creates a sense of tranquility and balance.
The Interplay of Light and Shadows is not only visually stunning but also functional. The homeowner follows the principles of I-Ching to seek balance and harmony in everyday life, and this design serves as a physical manifestation of those principles. The interplay of light and shadows, the contrasting linear flow, and the use of materials all contribute to creating a space that promotes self-reflection and spiritual growth.
Located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, this interior design project was completed in June 2019. It has received recognition for its innovative approach and creative integration of I-Ching. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022, further cementing its status as a remarkable and thought-provoking design.
The Interplay of Light and Shadows is a testament to the power of design to convey meaning and create a harmonious living environment. By seamlessly blending ancient philosophy with modern aesthetics, Chia-Yu Chen has created a design that not only captivates the eye but also enriches the soul.
